Hope…?

The 157 passengers onboard the Ethiopian Airlines flight 302 that left Addis Ababa, on March 10, were hopeful they would reach their respective destinations. They never reached.

Shortly after take-off, the flight with nationals from thirty countries, including Canada, came tumbling out of the sky and ploughed into a farm field, dashing all hopes and leaving those on the ground hopeless anyone survived the fiery crash. 

“My child! My brother!” said one mourner, as she joined thousands of people who have been flocking to the crash site to pay their last respect to those who perished. In a matter of seconds, the lives of 157 souls were gone – gone just like that!

An accident with such an international scope, which lead many countries to ground their Boeing 737 Max 8 and 9 airplanes, similar to the ones that crashed on March 10 and that of a Lion Air aircraft last October, is a grim reminder of how temporary we are as human beings. It is a reminder the hope we cling to in our daily walk is not real hope.

This blog often refers to the only true hope – Jesus Christ. When God calls us into His promise of everlasting life in His world-ruling kingdom on earth, we have an obligation to answer. We must shun the false hope to repent and accept Him as LORD and Saviour. Tomorrow is not promised to anyone. Whatever hope we have in in this life will all come to nought if Jesus Christ is left out of our plans.

I Cor. 15: 19, “If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most miserable.” How true? The passengers on flight 302 and other doomed flights; those who perished in accidents, natural disasters, crimes, and drugs, and whose life went unexpectedly, and quickly, in no likelihood had deaths on their minds. At least some of them must have had hopes for a better life. Yet the hope we have in this life is not certain. No one can be certain what will happen the next second of his or her life.

The only true hope then is to accept Jesus Christ as your LORD and Saviour. That’s real hope! Romans 8:24, “For in this hope we were saved. But, hope that is seen is no hope at all. Who hopes for what they already have?  But if we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it patiently.”

2 Corinthians 4:17-18, “For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, is working for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory, while we do not look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen.
