Time will tell …

The human race, for the most part, believes in some sort of an afterlife, be it reincarnation, heaven, hell or the Kingdom of God and so on. We aspire to be changed at a time yet future.

God promises the Christian eternal life. He lives in a totally different dimension not governed by time. Human beings need time for everything – to sleep, eat, work, survive as a species, and as weird as it might sound – we need time to die. For the Christian, time is everything, but for the Great God, it’s merely a measuring rod for our sojourn here on Earth.

Time is precious. As the seconds, minutes, hours, days, weeks, months, and years go by, we get older.  Today will never return neither will yesterday nor last year. You don’t know whether you will survive the end of the day or night. In fact, you aren’t even sure you will survive the next minute. “For what is your life? It is even a vapour that appears for a little time and then vanishes away,” (James 4:14).

Some scientists say time is relative.  The eminent physicist Albert Einstein comments  “People like us who believe in physics know that the distinction between the past, the present and the future is only a stubbornly persistent illusion.”

However, it does not matter what the scientist want to say or how they define time. God created time for a purpose and has reminded us in 2 Peter 3:8 that a day for him is like a thousand years for us. God has neither beginning nor end of days; he’s self-existent, hence this reference is just to give us an idea of His might and power and that  “For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts,” (Isa.55:9).

We are now directed by time in every single aspect of life, but the good news is one day time, as we know it, will be no more. Time regulates the seasons, the years, months, weeks, days, hours, minutes, seconds, yet one day all that will change.

God says a time is coming when there will be no day or night. When He gives us the precious gift of eternal life, time as we know it, has to go! The two cannot co-exist because there will be no more need for the kind of time that we need now to govern our life. We will be living in an environment or a brand new civilisation not subjected to decay because of time. Why? Eternal conditions will characterize this new phase of existence.  Time governs the physical and that’s why we need it now, but when the Kingdom of God is fully established on a renewed Earth, this physical need would have become obsolete, only to be replaced by the spiritual.

For the Christian, change is going to come. The Great God will change His saints in eleventh-one-hundreth of a second (in the twinkling of an eye) when the last trump shall sound and the dead in Christ shall rise first and those who are alive will rise to meet him in the air. (I Cor. 14 and 1 Thess. 4).

Christ’s sacrifice or atoning sacrifice for our sins will make this possible. God warns us in his own words to “redeem the time because the days are evil,” (Eph.5:16). He wants to make use of our time because before you know it another calendar year will pass, and keep passing, until you pile up the years, and even before that, death visits us. We have burial spots waiting for us, undertakers, too. In the meantime, there’s One who’s knocking on your door and wants to come in your life.
