What is your duty as a human being?

What is the duty of all human beings, who did not create themselves, but were created in the image of the Almighty, Omniscient and Omnipotent God?

Many have danced around this question for fear of trapping themselves into accepting that there are some biblical practices they should have been upholding, but they are not. As with many Christians, many do not read their Bibles to see exactly what it says. They prefer someone else to interpret for them or they simply follow the traditions they have been taught at the expense of true Biblical teachings.

Jesus Christ warns about this in Matt. 15:6, “Thus have ye made the commandment of God of none effect by your tradition. ⁷ Ye hypocrites, well did Esaias prophesy of you, saying, ⁸ This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me. ⁹ But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.”

What does the Word of God say about the duty of all human beings? Eccl. 12:13, “Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.” (emphasis mine)

Verse 14 goes on to say, “For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil.”

The Word of God, the Holy Bible that millions claim to believe says we should fear God and keep His commandments because that is our duty as a human being. Yet, from our pulpits we have pastors and preachers cramming down in the psyche of their members that they don’t need to keep the commandments because they are either impossible to keep; they are done away with, they were only for Israel, or God does not expects us to even try. Others say the law, including the commandments, have been “nailed to the cross,” and we have no obligations to follow them.

It is these same Christians who will readily follow their man-made traditions, especially Christmas and Easter, instead of God’s “appointed times,” or festivals/annual Sabbaths. Jesus said the same thing, they make His command so no effect because of their tradition.

We know keeping the commandments of God cannot, and never, will grant us eternal life. What we do know, and the Bible tells us to do is to keep them because that is our duty as a human being and they will lead us to God. God’s grace is what saves us. However, to be saved by grace does not mean we reject what God expects us to do in obedience and to show our love to Him. He even says, “whosoever says they love me and keep not my commandments is a liar and the truth is not him.”  Those are not my words, but the Bible’s; you are a liar if you claim you love God and keeps not His commandment.

We are not keeping the commandments to gain salvation. They cannot grant you salvation. We are keeping them to show our love for God and because it is our duty as a human being. God’s law, including the commandments, is eternal. Jesus Christ says think not, not even for a moment, that I came to destroy the law or the prophets (Matt. 5:17). I came to fulfill (magnify) it. Some people conclude wrongly that fulfill means done away with.  If He had come to do away with the law, how Could Jesus be saying don’t ever think I have come to destroy it? It makes no sense! What a blunder in this interpretation and how sad?

In Mark 7:9, Jesus puts it this way, “And he said unto them, you have a fine way of rejecting the commandment of God, that ye may keep your own tradition.”
